Comcast rethinks bandwidth caps, trials two new policies that involve higher 300GB monthly limits

Comcast’s bandwidth policy has come under fire from several directions lately, and today it’s announced plans to test two new systems for managing capacity. In a company blog post, VP Cathy Avgiris describes the new “flexible” approaches it will be testing out in certain markets that start off by raising the limit to 300GB (from 250GB where it’s been since 2008) per month. One of the plans involves offering 300GB as a base on its Essentials, Economy, and Performance internet packages, and higher limits on its Blast and Extreme tiers, with extra data available as an add-on, possibly $10 for 50GB or so. The other plan simply bumps all tiers to 300GB per month and offers the additional blocks of data as needed. For markets where it’s not testing the new plans, it’s suspending enforcement of the 250GB cap entirely for now, although it says it will still contact “excessive” users about their usage.

We’re currently on a conference call concerning the changes and Comcast is reaffirming its belief that the FCC has decided it can “manage” data usage on its network, and that it will continue to do so in a “non-discriminatory” way. Particularly since the launch of its Xfinity TV Xbox 360 app others like Netflix and some consumer and networking watchdogs would beg to differ, it will be interesting to see if these approaches change anything. Executives on the call noted “noise” around the Xbox 360 app in making the change, but also pointed to an “ongoing internal discussion” and simply that times have changed from four years ago. The words that keep coming up so far are choice and flexibility, as well as mentioning that even today, very few customers approach the previous 250GB limit. In response to a question, Avgiris indicated the median usage for customers is still around 8-10GB per month. We’ll find out more like where the test markets are later, for now hit the source link for all the information currently available.

Update: Netflix has responded to the move, and it’s about what you’d expect. In other words, it appreciates the notion, but it’s still mad.

Update 2: ArsTechnica got Comcast to open up about today’s news, and while it’s nothing too shocking, it’s a good read.

(AP) ? The New York Rangers don’t like being all even after two games, but they sure are used to it.

For the third straight series, the Eastern Conference’s top-seeded team has failed to build on an opening-game win, and now they have yielded home-ice advantage yet again. The Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals couldn’t make the most of it. The New Jersey Devils have other plans.

“We’ve been in this situation before,” Rangers captain Ryan Callahan said after New York’s 3-2 loss on Wednesday night. “We just have to go into Jersey and try to get that next game. We can’t get down.”

The Rangers bounced back with Game 3 wins in both previous rounds. They will get their next chance Saturday in Newark.

Two things New York can probably count on are a close game and another series that goes the distance. The Rangers outlasted the Senators and Capitals in seven games to reach the conference finals for the first time since 1997. Of the Rangers’ 16 postseason games, 12 have been decided by one goal.

After posting the best regular-season record in the East, New York is only 9-7 in the playoffs.

“Overall, we just have to be better,” goalie Henrik Lundqvist said.

With a two-day break between games, both teams will skip practice on Thursday before getting back on the ice Friday.

The Devils quickly changed the game plan from the opener. Instead of letting the Rangers block their shots, they decided to deflect some themselves. It worked twice. David Clarkson scored a tip-in goal off Adam Henrique’s shot 2:31 into the third period as New Jersey rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win.

“It’s a very hard building to play in, and 1-1 sounds much better than down 2-0,” Devils captain Zach Parise said. “We’re happy. We would have liked to have snuck out of here with two wins, but it didn’t happen. We’ll take 1-1.”

Before the game, the Rangers stressed how important it would be to grab a 2-0 lead, which would have been their first two-game edge in this postseason, but then didn’t provide the necessary effort to get it done.

“You need to improve as hockey team every game,” said succinct and disappointed coach John Tortorella, who declined to say what areas were deficient.

Clarkson built off the momentum created by Ryan Carter’s deflected goal late in the second period that tied the game, 2-2. Ilya Kovalchuk had given the Devils a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal in the first. Defenseman Bryce Salvador added two assists, and Martin Brodeur stopped 23 saves for his 108th playoff win.

Clarkson has three goals this postseason, and every one has been a game-winner, including the series-clincher against Philadelphia in Game 5 of the second round.

“Mr. Clutch? I don’t know about that,” Clarkson said. “I’m going to skate up and down and finish the checks and just bounce off people. It’s just a great feeling to be able to contribute. To get a tip on that felt pretty good.”

New Jersey had 26 attempted shots blocked in Game 1, 5 more than they got through to Lundqvist. The Devils cut the blocks to 16 on Wednesday and managed to get 27 on goal ? two more than New York.

“That team blocks so many shots,” Clarkson said. “It’s unbelievable how many. I think we found a way to shoot it and get sticks on it, and definitely that was big for us.”

Marc Staal and Chris Kreider scored power-play goals in the second period for the Rangers, who had 24 saves by Lundqvist.

New Jersey got even when Salvador wound up for a shot at the blue line and fired a drive that Carter ? with his back to the net ? brilliantly deflected past Lundqvist with 1:51 left in the second. Marian Gaborik stood up straight in front of Salvador, but didn’t drop down as many of his teammates have to try to block the shot. For that, he was pinned to the bench by Tortorella, even through New York’s power play in the third.

“On the second goal, I didn’t get the puck out, I guess. I don’t know. You’ll have to ask him,” said Gaborik, who returned to the ice with 8:40 remaining as the Rangers pressed to tie.

The Devils kept the pressure on the Rangers at the start of the third and wiped out the good work New York displayed in the second.

“It was a much different reaction when we went down by a goal than it was in the first game,” Parise said. “We didn’t change the way we played, and I think that was a big difference. We were comfortable with how we were playing. “

After spending much of the first penned in their own end, the Rangers rebounded to erase their early deficit and briefly take the lead thanks to their previously inept power play.

With Alexei Ponikarovsky off for interference, Staal fired a shot that sailed wide of the net and struck the back boards before popping back in front and pinballing into the net off Salvador and Brodeur at 2:23. The goal was originally credited to Derek Stepan, who was in front, but the puck managed to miss him both on the way toward the net and on the bounce back.

“I saw most of the pucks, but the Rangers came out hard,” Brodeur said. “They were around me a lot, and there were some bad bounces. It’s such a tough place to play sometimes here. There are bad bounces, and the boards are terrible.”

Staal nearly netted another moments later when he ripped a drive that Brodeur had to lunge fully to his left to snare with his glove.

Kreider, the rookie from Boston College, scored for the second straight game to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 12:19. Anton Stralman let go a shot from above the right circle that ticked Kreider’s stick and fluttered past Brodeur for the rookie’s fourth goal. He had to wait to get it because it was first given to Stralman before being changed during a commercial break.

But that was hardly the longest delay of the night. Before Kreider’s power-play goal, the action was stopped for about eight minutes as arena workers struggled to get the door to the Devils’ penalty box opened. Travis Zajac stood patiently as he waited to have a seat in the box. He even managed to laugh as did New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer and the usually stoic and agitated Tortorella.

Zajac, who first was sent to the Rangers’ box, stayed in New Jersey’s sin bin for only 1:47 before Kreider scored the Rangers’ second power-play goal of the night.

New York registered the first six shots of the period before New Jersey had its first about 8 minutes in, but the teams were even at 17 through 40 minutes.

Whether Brodeur was kidding or not about wanting Rangers to be injured by blocking shots, the home team wasn’t deterred from getting in front of drives.

“We have to try to get in lanes,” Callahan said. “Try to limit their time with the puck. If we do that, they are not going to have time to shoot.”

NOTES: The Rangers were 10 for 61 (16.4 percent) on the power play in the postseason before Wednesday. … The Devils returned defenseman Peter Harrold to the lineup and sat rookie Adam Larsson.

Corsair Vengeance K60

When you hop onto the gaming grid to engage in combat, the keyboard you type on for work just won’t do. You don’t want a keyboard, you want a weapon, crafted for reliability and fitted to your specific needs. Corsair has delivered just that with the Vengeance K60 gaming keyboard ($109.99 direct). It’s a solid gaming keyboard that offers a little something extra by way of a specially shaped and positioned wrist rest and 10 swappable keys sculpted and textured to make navigating through a digital combat zone as easy as walking in real life.

Design and Features
The K60 has a two-toned color scheme with a bare brushed aluminum deck studded with black plastic keycaps, similar to its Editors’-Choice-winning sibling, the Corsair Vengeance K90 ($129.99 direct, 4.5 stars). The plastic caps are made of black plastic, and use Cherry MX Red mechanical switches?the same used on top keyboards like the Vengeance K90 and the Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate ($129.99 direct, 4.5 stars)?for all of the typing keys and the numeric pad, but uses cheaper silicone dome switches under the lesser-used function keys. There’s also no backlight, so gaming in low light may leave you in the dark, so to speak.

On the keyboard itself, you’ll find a few extra controls for media, like buttons for stop, play/pause, forward and back search, as well as a rolling volume control and mute button. A Windows lock key turns off any pesky functions that might interfere with your gameplay, and a USB pass through lets you plug in a mouse or flash drive without having to snake a cable behind your tower. A durable braided USB cable gives you six feet of length, and two USB connections. A braided cable sheathing prevents tangling, while reinforced plugs and cable connections will stave off any of the wear and tear that plagues cheaper keyboards.

Two features found on the K60 that the Corsair K90 lacked, however, are the unique one-handed wrist rest and switchable keycaps. The wrist rest gives you an ergonomic boost to your gaming, shaped with a comfortable thumb rest and positioned to put the WASD keys directly under your fingertips. Enhancing this further is the inclusion of 10 switchable keycaps, letting you swap the standard black keys for bright red, textured keys, sculpted to make navigating in games even more comfortable.

The wrist rest actually functions as storage for the swappable keys, opening up to hold the unused set and storing the included key removal tool. The molded keycaps also have a pattern of raised triangles texturing the surface of the keys, providing some traction, but also helping you recognize the keys by feel. The same textured pattern covers the space bar, which is not switchable.

The only issue we can claim is that the swappable gaming keys are almost too specialized. The number keys have no secondary characters shown on them, making it a bit of a blind hunt to find the correct keys for some symbols. The WASD keys are also perfect for maneuvering in an FPS game, but terrible for typing. If your PC use switches between leisure time gaming and daytime productivity, it can be a hassle to constantly swap out key-sets.

It’s not just the molded keys and mechanical switches that make this a solid gaming keyboard, however. Anti-ghosting lets you press any number of keys simultaneously, while 20 key rollover with a 1ms response rate keeps up with your typing no matter how fast your fingers fly. We tested the keyboard in daily use and in the throes of pitched battle, and it served us well in every instance.

Corsair’s Vengeance line of gaming peripherals has proven itself to be both well made and perfectly suited to gamers’ unique needs. The Corsair Vengeance K60 differs a bit from the Editors’ Choice Vengeance K90?with less comfortable keys, no backlight, and no programmable functions?but it’s still a unique offering that should satisfy anyone who picks one up.

Jay Warner: Church doesn’t need Liddick

Mr. Liddick does not speak for the Church anymore than former Gov. Ritter does.

It would be my suggestion that Mr. Liddick re-read the United States Constitution that he so often relies on for the basis of his arguments. We have freedom of religion and we have freedom of speech combined in the First Amendment.

Former Gov. Ritter has every right to be a Catholic and express his opinions; Mr. Liddick should rally to that point rather than attempting to demean. Mr. Liddick should be defending one’s right to express their opinion and religious beliefs.

If the Church thought it needed defending, I am sure the Church could write their own letter of rebuttal and not delegate the task you, Mr. Liddick.

Features of Insect Longboards

Insect longboards are kinds of skateboard that are design for street sports. It has a board decks that can be use for skating in the street. It also has large wheels for fast speed. I prefer to use this boards than skateboard because it is safer than the usual skateboard. Skateboards are only use for different tricks, it also has a sports. This Board is light and very comfortable to use for street sports. The Skateboarder will balance atop a 130 cm/52 inches skateboard without any brakes with the running speed up to 40 kph/25 mph. Though it is risky to ride in Insect longboards but I can assure you that you will really enjoy. You just have to practice all day long. There are also tutorials in YouTube.

There are three Basic parts of your Insect longboards:

First is the Deck, you must choose the right and appropriate Deck for you depending of what setup you want.

The Deck is the most expensive part of your long board Next would be the Trucks, these are what causes the board wheels to turn and lastly the Wheels which causes the long board to run.

Here are the most common Insect Longboard lineup:

Insect Dragonfly – It is an insect-long board that is the Original Size of a long board but later on was modified into many different shapes shown below. In this design Camber and flex works together which causes the long board to “load up” going into a turn and also “snap” out of it into the next turn. The flex and “bounce” perform like a snowboard and it is Perfect for cross-training for winter, deep downhill carving and cruising.

Insect Big Bug – In this design there is no very aggressive carving here but it is very capable in the carving area. This design is called the Big Bug bamboo long board, this long board is a classic nose-riding and sidewalk surfing at its best. It is faster than Dragonfly bamboo long board because it has a lighter deck. It also has a long wheelbase and lower camber that makes the long board consummate hill-bomber.

Insect Firefly – The new design was name the Firefly Bamboo Long Board; it was developed in partnership with many prominent downhill riders. This design was made because the riders are looking for a top-mount speed board to handle more technical runs where pure turning leverage trumped the lower center of gravity you get with a drop-through board like the “Lightning Bug”. This design was tested with many riders at Maryhill, Danger Bay and on the mean hills of Seattle. The Firefly has been successfully ridden at speeds exceeding freeway speed limits.

These are all the Insect longboards that were design with different Skateboard designer.

Biden attacks Romney tenure as venture capitalist

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden, campaigning in Democratic territory with high unemployment, went after Republican Mitt Romney‘s business background Wednesday and cast him as a corporate raider more interested in profits than people.

Biden said the former businessman favors policies that benefit the well-to-do over average people. He said Obama wants to give everyone a fair shake and make sure everyone plays by the same rules.

“These guys don’t get it,” Biden said, his voice rising as he addressed supporters on a factory floor in Youngstown, where the unemployment rate is 10.4 percent, more than 2 points above the national average.

“As long as the government helps the guys at the top, workers and small businesses and communities, they can fend for themselves,” Biden said. At the same time, “The big guy is doing well,” he said.

The speech in Ohio, an economically battered state that will help decide the November presidential election, continued the effort by President Barack Obama‘s campaign to portray Romney as more in tune with rich people like himself.

Obama’s campaign and an independent group that supports the president have begun airing ads in several states, including Ohio, that highlight the failure of a Missouri-based steel company that was bought by Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney helped get off the ground. GST Steel later went bankrupt in 2001, costing 750 people their jobs. Romney was no longer with Bain at the time of GST’s collapse.

“Nobody knows better than the people in the (Mahoning River) valley the consequences of that kind of philosophy. You have been through hell and back,” the vice president said.

Romney’s campaign said he has a net job creation record both as a businessman and from his term as Massachusetts governor. It countered the attack on Bain Capital by citing Solyndra, a California-based solar energy company that collapsed despite receiving more than $500 million in Obama administration loans.

“President Obama has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars on unsuccessful policies that have not created jobs, burdened future generations with massive debt and resulted in failed investments like Solyndra,” said Romney spokeswoman Sarah Pompei.

Biden’s speech came a day after Romney portrayed Obama as an agent of reckless spending who is leading the country toward a threatening debt crisis. And it comes two days after the Obama campaign signaled it would make Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital an issue in a campaign that both sides are trying to keep focused on the economy and jobs.

The back and forth illustrates the power of the economy as the dominant campaign issue this year, leaving voters to decide whether the slow recovery represents a success or a failure.

In choosing Youngstown for Biden’s speech, the Obama campaign picked a symbol of Rust Belt economic struggles. But as Ohio’s unemployment rate has dropped by 3 percentage points in two years, Biden is casting Obama economic policies as a success.

SynchroCam Sorely Disappoints

I very much prefer to only write reviews of apps and products that I appreciate, that I find useful, interesting, or just plain awesome. This is not one of those reviews. And the app? It’s not one of those apps, either. The makers of some products sometimes try hard to make their product appear to be things they really are not.
